Although best known for his work as a theater designer, Berman was an accomplished painter, having studied in Paris after fleeing Russia with his family in 1918. Berman was part of a group of artists known as Neo-Romantics. He also explored surrealist subjects, like nature/fantasy, and would combine both styles to create dream-like imagery, often alluding to dark ideas and the fallibility of life.
